Controller vs Keyboard & Mouse

Both input devices are fully supported and neither is an afterthought. The differences are structural, not cosmetic, and they're worth knowing before you pick.

The short answer

Play whichever you're comfortable with — this is not a game where one device is quietly broken. Keyboard and mouse gives you finer aim and instant access to modifier-key shortcuts; the controller gets a genuinely separate control scheme built around not having modifier keys, plus aim assist doing real work underneath. Neither is a port of the other.

The controller is not a remapped keyboard

The usual pattern in this genre is one set of actions with two sets of buttons pointed at them. Mistfall Hunter doesn't do that — several actions exist twice, once for each device, as genuinely distinct inputs:

ActionKeyboard & mouseController
Mega actionMega Actiona separate Gamepad Mega Action input
Item tooltip — more optionsMorea separate Gamepad More input
Item tooltip — pinAlt (pin tips)a separate Gamepad Pin Tips input
Camp / UI shoulder shortcutsdedicated Left Trigger and Left Shoulder inputs
Why it matters: rebinding a key on one device does not touch the other, and a controller layout that looks like it's missing an action is usually just using the gamepad-specific version of it.

Modifier keys are the real design split

The inventory is where the two devices diverge most. On keyboard, item handling leans on modifiers and chords — shift to split a stack, alt to pin a tooltip, plus direct actions for equipping, discarding, marking, comparing and swapping into either equipment slot. A controller has no modifier keys, so instead of stacking those onto one button the game gives the gamepad its own inputs and a hideable tooltip overlay.

Practical read: heavy inventory management — sorting a full stash, splitting stacks, comparing gear quickly — is meaningfully faster on keyboard and mouse. Combat is not.

Controller bindings appear and disappear on purpose

On a gamepad, the interaction controls are not always live. The game adds the gamepad interaction bindings only while something is actually interactable — when there are interaction options, a cancellable action, an Fn prompt, an interaction progress bar, or lootable nearby — and removes them again the moment there isn't. Keyboard bindings stay put.

This is why a controller prompt can seem to vanish between fights. It isn't a bug and it isn't your binding — the context genuinely isn't loaded when there's nothing to interact with.

Your controls change with your class

There is no single control scheme. A base layout covers everything shared, and each of the six classes layers its own mapping on top of it at a higher priority — so a class-specific binding overrides the general one rather than being added alongside it.

  • Mercenary, Sorcerer, Blackarrow, Shadowstrix, Seer and Withered Knight each load their own class mapping.
  • The shared base layout sits underneath at the lowest priority.
  • Switching class therefore changes what some buttons do, on both devices.

Aim assist is the controller's compensator

There is no player lock-on in Mistfall Hunter for either device — nothing auto-targets. Aim assist is what closes the gap for stick aiming, and it is not one setting: it works by snapping and by damping, and it applies a different configuration for ranged weapons (Bow, Staff, Conduit) than for everything else.

If controller aim feels wrong, the aim-assist strength preset is the first thing to check — it writes several underlying values at once, and editing any one of them individually flips it to a custom state. The full breakdown is on the Lock-On & Aim Assist page.

Rebinding

Keyboard and controller bindings are edited on separate screens — the gamepad has its own key-set interface rather than sharing the keyboard one. Expect to configure them independently, and don't assume a change on one carried over.

Frequently asked questions

Does Mistfall Hunter support controllers?

Yes, fully — including a dedicated gamepad rebinding screen and controller-specific input actions that don't exist on keyboard. It isn't a remapped keyboard layout.

Is controller or keyboard and mouse better in Mistfall Hunter?

Neither is disadvantaged in combat: there's no lock-on for either device, and aim assist compensates for stick aiming. Keyboard and mouse is clearly faster for inventory work, because item handling uses modifier keys and chords a controller doesn't have.

Why did my controller button prompt disappear?

The gamepad interaction bindings are added only while something is interactable — interaction options, a cancellable action, an Fn prompt, a progress bar or lootable nearby — and removed otherwise. Keyboard bindings don't behave this way.

Do the controls change between classes?

Yes. A shared base layout applies to everything, and each of the six classes loads its own mapping on top at a higher priority, so class bindings override the general ones. Switching class changes what some buttons do.

Does rebinding my keyboard change my controller layout?

No. The two are configured on separate screens and stored independently — a change on one device does not carry over to the other.
