Ciphers & the Golden Cipher

Ciphers drop in matches, survive only if you extract with them, and pay out when the right camp NPC reads them. Here's the whole system, with the real numbers.

What ciphers are

Ciphers are ancient encrypted texts that turn up among the ruins — in-world, they're argued over as either records the gods left behind or secrets the old priests buried on purpose. Mechanically they are carried loot: you find one in a match, and it is worth nothing until it leaves the map with you.

Almost none of them can be read where you find them. A cipher only becomes rewards after you extract with it and hand it to someone at Windrest who recognises its runes and marks.

The fifteen cipher types

The released game carries fifteen distinct named ciphers. Three of them — Ancestral, Bloodbound and Shadow — are the ones the Golden Coffer hands out, at exactly one-third each.

  • Ancestral Cipher
  • Bloodbound Cipher
  • Shadow Cipher
  • Elder Edict Cipher
  • Echo Cipher
  • Ashen Cipher
  • Mantra Cipher
  • Nameless Cipher
  • Abyssal Cipher
  • Old World Cipher
  • Prayer Cipher
  • Lost Cipher
  • Forbidden Cipher
  • Survivor Cipher
  • Seal Cipher
If you played the playtest and remember Mantra and Ashen ciphers, they are still here — the names carried over into the full release rather than being retired with the old event.

How to decipher one

  • Find a cipher in a match — they come from defeating monsters and from opening chests.
  • Extract with it. A cipher lost on a failed raid is gone; nothing is banked mid-match.
  • Return to Windrest and speak to a camp NPC. The prompt is simply Decipher, and the game tracks Deciphering Progress and a Decipher History for you.
  • Pick which cipher to hand over. With none in your stash the menu reads 'No cipher available.'
Golden Coffers work differently — a coffer arrives in your mail and opens by itself the moment you claim it, granting a cipher directly. There's nothing to unlock and no timer.

Hand it to the right NPC — the first-delivery bonus

This is the part most players miss. Any camp NPC can decipher, but each cipher type has one NPC who genuinely knows it, and the first time you bring that cipher to that person they pay an extra reward on top of the normal payout. Bring it to anyone else and you still get the base rewards — you just quietly forfeit the bonus, once, permanently for that type.

Seven NPCs handle deciphering: Soekja, Dew, Pip, Dramm, Cazarro, Sigrid and Merimo.

For the Golden Cipher specifically, Sigrid is widely reported as the correct NPC. That pairing is a community read — the game's own data confirms that a correct NPC exists and that the first delivery pays a bonus, but does not publish the type-to-NPC table, so treat the specific name as unconfirmed.

The Golden Cipher launch event

Golden Cipher is a limited event built for Mistfall Hunter's official launch. Golden Ciphers drop from monsters and chests across all stages and every Gyldening Intensity — there is no zone or difficulty you need to farm specifically.

Grand-prize draw (live stream)2026/08/13
Those first two rows are different deadlines and it's an easy way to lose the big prize. Ciphers keep dropping until August 12, but eligibility for the Alienware PC closes two days earlier, on August 10.

To qualify for the grand-prize draw you need three things inside the eligibility window: reach level 5, unlock the Golden Cipher event feature, and successfully extract from at least one match.

Golden Envoys — the guaranteed cipher

During the event, participating streamers enter matches as Golden Envoys. They deliberately give away their position, and while a bounty is active they carry a marker over their head. Kill one and you are guaranteed to find one Golden Cipher in their inventory — the only guaranteed source in the event.

Exact reward odds

Deciphering a Golden Cipher rolls this table. These are the game's own published rates, not estimates — and the headline is that roughly 96 of every 100 ciphers pay out 1,000 Gyldenblod or less.

Every reward except Gyldenblod is once per account. Once you've won the badge or a key it is out of your table, so your realistic outcome converges on Gyldenblod fast.

The milestones are the real reward

Because the rare drops are fractions of a percent, the dependable payouts are the guaranteed milestones — and they cost nothing but volume.

10 ciphers deciphered
Guarantees the Emote: Strike It Rich.
20 ciphers deciphered
Guarantees the Golden Woodling – Head cosmetic.
Duplicate cosmetics aren't wasted — they're dismantled automatically into Soul Coins.

Physical prizes and redemption codes

Virtual rewards land in-game. A physical prize instead drops a redemption code out of the cipher, which you take to the event's redemption page and use to submit your contact details. That code is the only proof of the win — it isn't recoverable and shouldn't be shared. Shipping is confirmed within two months of the event ending and is covered by the publisher, internationally.

Three things this isn't

The locked-chest rune puzzle
Locked chests in a raid run their own rune-matching minigame. The interface calls it deciphering too, but it is unrelated to ciphers, happens in-match, and pays chest loot rather than event rewards.
Gesture: Decipher
A cosmetic emote that happens to share the name. It has no effect on ciphers.
The Gylden Rush
The playtest-era event. Coverage often uses the two names interchangeably, but the Gylden Rush was the beta run — the launch event is Golden Cipher, with a different prize pool and different dates.

Frequently asked questions

How do I decipher a Golden Cipher in Mistfall Hunter?

Find it in a match, extract with it, then return to Windrest and select Decipher at a camp NPC. Golden Coffers are the exception — they arrive by mail and open automatically when you claim it, granting a cipher outright.

Which NPC should I give my cipher to?

Seven NPCs can decipher: Soekja, Dew, Pip, Dramm, Cazarro, Sigrid and Merimo. Each cipher type has one NPC who truly knows it, and the first delivery to that NPC pays a bonus on top of the normal rewards. Sigrid is widely reported as the right one for the Golden Cipher, though the game does not publish the full type-to-NPC table.

When does the Golden Cipher event end?

Golden Ciphers stop dropping at 17:00 UTC+0 on August 12, 2026. The grand-prize eligibility window closes earlier, at 23:59 UTC+0 on August 10, 2026, and the Alienware PC winner is drawn on a live stream on August 13.

What are the odds of a good Golden Cipher reward?

Low. Gyldenblod ×450 alone is 90.7761%, and about 96% of ciphers pay 1,000 Gyldenblod or less. The Lifetime Season Pass is 0.0020% and the Razer mouse 0.0024%. The reliable rewards are the guaranteed milestones at 10 and 20 ciphers deciphered.

How many cipher types are there?

Fifteen: Ancestral, Bloodbound, Shadow, Elder Edict, Echo, Ashen, Mantra, Nameless, Abyssal, Old World, Prayer, Lost, Forbidden, Survivor and Seal. A Golden Coffer grants Ancestral, Bloodbound or Shadow at exactly one-third each.

Can I still get ciphers if I lose the raid?

No. A cipher only counts once you extract with it — dying with one in your bag loses it, the same as any other carried loot.

Put it to use

How this system behaves is based on Mistfall Hunter's own game data. Exact tuning numbers — stat values, drop rates and prices — are confirmed with the full release on July 29, 2026.
